Privacy Policy

KTL (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a small, independently-run relationship app for couples, based in Scotland, United Kingdom. There is no separate registered company behind KTL at this time. This policy explains what personal data we handle, why, and the choices and rights you have under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Questions or requests: support@getktl.app.

1 · What data we collect

Waitlist data: if you join the waitlist before we open up, your email address, the referral code we generate for you, and the code of whoever referred you. We use it to hold your place, email you your confirmation, and tell you when it is your turn. Every waitlist email carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops all of them.
Account data: your name and email address, supplied via and managed by our sign-in provider (Clerk).
Your date of birth, which we ask for when you set up your world. We use it to check you are 16 or over before an account is created, and we keep the date and the fact we checked it. If you later switch on astrology, the same date is reused rather than collected twice.
Relationship content you create: shared memories (title, note, date and up to three photos each), cuteness-boost messages, daily “Talking Hearts” answers, daily-chest love notes and secret tasks, and your reward and redemption history.
Optional astrology data: the time and place of birth, only if you set up that feature.
Location data: the coordinates of any memory you pin on your shared map, and the place name we derive from that point.
Notification data: a device push subscription (endpoint and encryption keys), only if you turn alerts on.
Gameplay data: XP, levels, ranks, streaks, quests and trophies generated as you use the app.
Technical data: standard server logs (e.g. IP address and request timestamps) generated automatically by our hosting provider.
Website statistics: on our public marketing pages only, we count page views and record the page visited, the site that linked you to us, and your rough country, browser and device type. This uses no cookies, creates no profile, and cannot identify you. It does not run inside the app once you are signed in.

2 · Why we process it

To provide your account and the core app – necessary to perform our contract with you.
To check your age at sign-up and keep under-16s out – our legal obligation and our legitimate interest in running an age-appropriate service. This one is not optional: without a date of birth we cannot create your account.
To run optional features you switch on, like astrology or push notifications – based on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by turning the feature off or deleting the related data.
To keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and enforce our Terms of Service – our legitimate interest, balanced against your rights.
To understand how people find and use our public marketing pages, so we can improve them – our legitimate interest. We use privacy-friendly, cookieless website statistics that measure visits in aggregate and never identify you or follow you across other websites.

We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising. We do not track you across other websites, and we do not build a profile of you.

We do measure how the app is used, in a deliberately limited way. When you do something like open your daily chest or pin a memory, we record that the action happened – the name of the action and, at most, a count or a yes/no alongside it. We never record what you wrote, who it was for, or anything either of you typed. These counts are not tied to your account: we send no name, no email address and no identifier with them, so they cannot be traced back to you or read as a history of your relationship. We use them only to see which parts of KTL people actually use.

3 · Sharing with your partner

KTL links exactly two people into a private, shared world. By design, most content you add – memories, streaks, boosts, answers, chest history – is visible to your linked partner. Only add content you’re comfortable with them seeing.

4 · Who processes data on our behalf

Clerk – handles sign-in and account/session management.
Railway – hosts the application and its database.
An object storage provider – holds the photos you upload to your memories. They are served only through KTL and only to you and your partner.
Sentry – receives technical error reports when something in KTL breaks, so we can fix it. We strip email addresses, tokens and similar details before anything is sent.
OpenStreetMap Nominatim (operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation) – turns the coordinates of a pinned memory into a place name.
OpenFreeMap – serves the map itself. Your phone requests map tiles from them directly, so they see your device’s IP address and which part of the map you are looking at. They do not receive your memories, your account or anything you have written.
Expo, and through it your phone’s own push service (Google on Android, Apple on iOS) – delivers the notifications you opt into. To do that they receive a device token and the wording of the notification itself, which can include your partner’s name and what they wrote.
Umami – provides the cookieless visit statistics for our public pages and the limited in-app usage counts described above. It sets no cookies and receives no name, email address or identifier.
Resend – delivers the emails we send you, such as your waitlist confirmation. It receives your email address and the contents of that message, and nothing else.

We do not sell or share your data with advertisers.

5 · International transfers

Some providers we use, including Clerk and Railway, are based in – or may process data in – the United States and other countries outside the UK. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on the safeguards recognised under UK data protection law, such as our providers’ participation in recognised data transfer frameworks or their own standard contractual clauses.

6 · Keeping and deleting data

We keep your data for as long as your world exists. Deleting your world permanently deletes it for both partners – every memory, photo, message and reward – immediately, and it cannot be undone. You can export or delete your data at any time from Settings. Deleting your world also deletes both sign-ins, including the email addresses behind them, so nothing is left to sign back in with. 7 · Your rights

Under the UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to our processing of your data, receive it in a portable format, and withdraw consent at any time where we rely on it. You can act on most of this yourself, any time, from Settings (“Export my data” and “Delete world”) – deleting your world erases your sign-in and email address along with it. For anything else, email support@getktl.app. If you’re not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).

8 · Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) throughout, and we delegate sign-in and password handling entirely to Clerk rather than storing credentials ourselves. No system is completely secure, and we can’t guarantee absolute security.

9 · Automated decision-making

We do not use your data to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects on you.

10 · Cookies

We use only essential cookies, needed for you to sign in and stay signed in. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies. Our website statistics are deliberately cookieless – they store nothing on your device and need no cookie banner.

11 · Children

KTL is not intended for anyone under 16, and we enforce that at sign-up: we ask for your date of birth and no account is created if you are under 16. If we become aware we’ve collected data from someone under this age without an appropriate basis, we’ll delete it.

We may update this policy and will note the date it changes. Last updated: 17 September 2026.
