Making a 12-hour time difference work: UK and Australia
The UK and eastern Australia are 9 to 11 hours apart, never quite 12. The real gap through the year, the best times to call, and the out-of-step weekend.
A 12-hour time difference in a long-distance relationship sounds brutal, and between the UK and Australia it’s slightly kinder than the number. Sydney and Melbourne are 11 hours ahead of the UK through the British winter and 9 hours ahead through the British summer, so one of you is eating breakfast while the other is sorting their tea. That’s the trick: your morning lines up with their evening, and the other way round.
Close enough to call it 12. The exact number still matters, though, because it shifts several times a year and the best time to call shifts with it.
Our guide to long distance with a time difference covers the general method. This one is just the UK and Australia, with the actual numbers.
How big is the UK and Australia time difference, really?
Both countries change their clocks, in opposite directions, on different Sundays.
- The UK goes forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October (gov.uk). That’s 25 October 2026, then 28 March and 31 October 2027.
- New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT run daylight saving from 4 October 2026 to 4 April 2027 (NSW Government).
- Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory don’t change their clocks at all, so only the UK moves.
- New Zealand runs daylight saving from 27 September 2026 to 4 April 2027 (govt.nz), and that’s where a genuine 12 hours turns up.
Put together, here’s the gap from the UK:
| From the UK to | UK winter (25 Oct 2026 to 28 Mar 2027) | UK summer (from 4 Apr 2027) | The in-between weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney or Melbourne | 11 hours ahead | 9 hours ahead | 10 hours from 28 Mar to 4 Apr 2027, and again for most of October 2027 |
| Brisbane | 10 hours ahead | 9 hours ahead | No clock change there, so 9 hours from 28 Mar 2027 |
| Adelaide | 10.5 hours ahead | 8.5 hours ahead | 9.5 hours in the same weeks as Sydney |
| Perth | 8 hours ahead | 7 hours ahead | No clock change there, so 7 hours from 28 Mar 2027 |
| Auckland | 13 hours ahead | 11 hours ahead | 12 hours from 28 Mar to 4 Apr 2027, and from 26 Sep 2027 |

When to talk in a 12-hour time difference long-distance relationship
Through the UK winter, go early. On a weekday, 7am to 8am in the UK is 6pm to 7pm in Sydney. They’re done with work, you haven’t started, and someone has a bus to catch, so the call ends on its own. The late-night UK slot is much harder, because 9pm or 10pm for you is 8am or 9am for them, right as their day kicks off.
Through the UK summer, it flips. At 9 hours, 7am in the UK is 4pm in Sydney, still the middle of the working day. The better weekday slot moves to the end of your day: 10pm to 11pm in the UK is 7am to 8am in Sydney, before they head out.
Neither slot is free. In winter, the UK partner sets an earlier alarm. In summer, the UK partner stays up later and the Australian partner gives up a slow breakfast. At least the clocks share out the awkward hour.
The weekend is out of step
When Saturday starts in Sydney, it’s 1pm on Friday in the UK winter. By the time you’ve finished work on Friday, their weekend is well under way. And Sunday evening for you is Monday morning for them: 9pm on a UK Sunday is 8am on Monday in Sydney.
So the weekend you really share runs from about UK Saturday morning to UK Sunday lunchtime. The good slots:
- UK Saturday morning is Sydney Saturday evening. 9am in the UK is 8pm there in winter and 6pm in summer.
- UK Sunday morning is Sydney Sunday evening. Same maths, before their week starts.
- UK Friday night is Sydney Saturday morning, in winter. 8pm on a Friday in the UK is 7am on Saturday there, so you can wind down while they wake up.
- UK Sunday evening is their Monday morning. Don’t save the big weekly catch-up for then.
Dates that catch couples out
- Birthdays and anniversaries land in Australia first. Midnight in Sydney is 1pm the day before in the UK winter, and 3pm the day before in the UK summer. Want to be first? Send it in your afternoon.
- Christmas morning in Sydney is Christmas Eve evening in the UK. 7am on 25 December there is 8pm on 24 December here. Spending Christmas apart has ideas for the day.
- The changeover Sundays. Put 28 March, 4 April and 31 October 2027, plus Australia’s change in early October, in both calendars.
- Partner in Brisbane or Perth? Their clocks never change, so only the UK’s two Sundays matter.
Sleep, fairness and the days the gap wins
Don’t make a 3am alarm your routine. It feels romantic for a week and wrecks you by the third. One protected call at a sane hour, plus voice notes and messages they pick up when they wake, beats nightly exhaustion.
Some weeks, work and sleep will leave almost no overlap at all. That’s the gap, not the relationship. If one of you is always the one staying up or getting up, say so before it turns into a quiet grudge.

Questions people ask
Is the UK 12 hours behind Australia?
Not exactly. Sydney and Melbourne are 11 hours ahead of the UK between late October and late March, and 9 hours ahead from early April to early October, with 10-hour weeks around the clock changes. Brisbane is 10 or 9 hours ahead and Perth 8 or 7, because neither changes its clocks. New Zealand is where the gap reaches a full 12 hours, for a few weeks each year.
What is the best time to call Australia from the UK?
During the UK winter, early morning works best on weekdays: 7am to 8am in the UK is 6pm to 7pm in Sydney, after their working day. During the UK summer, late evening works better: 10pm to 11pm in the UK is 7am to 8am in Sydney, before theirs starts. At weekends, UK Saturday and Sunday mornings line up with Australian evenings.
Can a long-distance relationship work with a 12 hour time difference?
Yes, and a gap that big comes with one advantage: one partner’s morning lines up with the other’s evening, so there’s a natural daily slot to talk. What helps most is choosing a regular call time for each season, sending messages and voice notes the other person can pick up when they wake, and taking turns with the less convenient hour.
When do the clocks change in the UK and Australia?
The UK clocks go forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October, which means 25 October 2026 and 28 March 2027. In New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, daylight saving runs from 4 October 2026 to 4 April 2027. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory don’t change their clocks.
