Why a text thread is not enough when you live apart
You can survive long distance on texts and calls. Plenty of couples do. Here is what a dedicated app actually replaces, and why the ones who switch tend not to go back.
The limit
What texting cannot do.
A text thread is a log, not a record. It has no memory of its own: no map of the places you have been, no running total of who showed up more this month, no way to ask a question and get an honest answer instead of a performed one.
It is also flat. Every message looks the same as the last one, so the ones that mattered get buried under the ones that did not.
The advice
The problem with 'just call more.'
It is the default advice for a reason, and it is thin. Calls are synchronous: they need both of you free at the same hour, across whatever time difference you are working with. Once you are calling every night it stops being an event and starts being an obligation you can fail at.
A missed call reads as a missed effort. A missed async boost does not, because it was never a deadline.
The swap
What it replaces.
Three things a text thread is bad at: the daily check-in that does not depend on both of you being free, the shared history of where you have actually been together, and making effort visible when distance hides it by default.
KTL replaces the check-in with a boost and a daily Talking Hearts question. It replaces the history with a fog-of-war map you clear together. It replaces invisible effort with a number that only goes up because someone bothered.
No downside
Free, so there is no reason not to run it alongside texting.
This is not a pitch to stop texting. Keep the thread. KTL is free for both of you, no trial and no card, so there is nothing to lose by running it next to whatever you already do.
Side by side
One week apart, with it and without it.
Without
A "how was your day" that gets a one-word answer
With KTL
A boost with a reason attached, waiting when they wake up
Without
Trying to remember if you told them about the coffee shop
With KTL
A pinned place on a map that is only yours
Without
A missed call because of the time difference, again
With KTL
Nothing missed, because nothing needed you both online
Without
No record of the week beyond a scroll of grey and blue bubbles
With KTL
A month you can actually replay at the end of it
