Why we put XP and a rank multiplier on a relationship
Gamifying a relationship sounds like a terrible idea. Here is the specific design reasoning behind KTL — what the energy limit is for, why you cannot earn your own XP, and where we deliberately stopped.
Putting points on affection is the kind of idea that deserves suspicion. Most gamification is a dark pattern wearing a progress bar — a streak you are afraid to lose, a number designed to make quitting feel expensive. We built one anyway, and the design constraints are the whole reason it does not feel gross.
You cannot earn your own XP
This is the one rule everything else hangs off. In KTL, XP never comes from your own actions. It arrives only when your partner spends their energy on you. There is no grinding, no self-optimisation, no way to climb by being diligent on your own.
It means your level is not a measure of how hard you worked. It is a record of how often someone else thought about you, which is a far stranger and better thing to keep score of.
The energy limit exists to make it scarce
You get six energy a day. It refills at midnight and it does not stack up. That cap is the most important number in the app.
Without it, the correct strategy would be to spam the button, and a message you can send infinitely is worth nothing. Six a day means every boost is a small decision. Scarcity is what stops "you are cute" from becoming noise.
The multiplier rewards the long game
- Fresh Spawn at levels 1–4 takes a boost at face value.
- Smitten at 10–19 is worth one and a half times as much.
- Endgame Boss at 50+ triples every single boost.
It snowballs deliberately. The further along you are, the more each small gesture is worth — which is roughly how long relationships actually work. The shorthand between two people who have been at it for years carries more than the same words did in month one.
Where we stopped
There are things we will not add. No leaderboard against other couples. No comparison to strangers. No punishment for a quiet week beyond a flame going out, and even that can be frozen. Nothing you can buy to skip the part where someone has to actually think of you.
A relationship is not a game you can win, and any mechanic that implies otherwise is a bug. The points are a way of noticing effort that distance would otherwise hide. That is all they are for.
