20 conversation starters for long-distance couples

Beyond "how was your day": questions built for two people who do not share a room, sorted from light to genuinely revealing.

How was your day is not a bad question, it is just a small one, and asked every single day it eventually stops producing anything worth hearing. These are sorted from light to a little more revealing, for whenever the small version has run dry.

Light questions for a quick check-in

  • What is the best thing that happened today, even a small one?
  • What did you eat that you would eat again tomorrow?
  • What is one thing you are looking forward to this week?
  • What made you laugh today, if anything did?

Questions for a proper phone call

  • What is something you believed five years ago that you no longer believe?
  • What is a small habit of mine you actually like?
  • What is something you are proud of that nobody has asked about recently?
  • What does a good week actually look like for you right now?

Questions that only work written down

Some questions get a more honest answer typed than spoken, because there is a beat of thinking time before it is sent and no face to watch react in real time. What are you afraid of that you have not said out loud. What do you need from me that you have not asked for. Questions like that land better in writing.

Turning this into a daily habit

One question a day beats a list of forty saved for a rainy conversation. This is the entire mechanism behind Talking Hearts in KTL: one shared question, answered separately and revealed together, so neither of you is steering the other person's answer.
